This page provides information on the procedures involved in applying to the UCR Psychology Department's Graduate Program.

An extensive description of the Graduate Program can be found on our web pages - Graduate Studies in Psychology . Further information can be obtained from individual faculty members or from the graduate admissions chair:

UCR GRE Institution code is 4839

It is important to consider your interests in the field and the extent to which they are complemented by the interests of our faculty members. The UCR Psychology Graduate Program provides Doctoral-level research-oriented training and encourages a strong mentoring relationship between the student and a faculty member. Thus, it is important that the research being done here at UCR fit well with your interests. Please note that there is no clinical or counseling program at UCR.

Second, if you feel that your interests are reflected in the department's curriculum, we encourage you to complete the Express Application Form. The Express Application goes only to the Psychology Department and allows us to consider your interests and qualifications before we receive the official Graduate School application (which usually takes longer to complete). Please be sure to complete the "Your Interests" section of the Express Application with a brief summary of the interests.

Third, you will need to complete the official UCR Graduate School Application. This is the application that serves as the "official" application to the Psychology Department's graduate program. The UCR Graduate Division web pages provide more information about this application, including downloadable application forms! Please note that applications for the Psychology Department should be received by us by January 2, 2009, (not the later dates indicated by the UCR Graduate Division) for consideration for Fall 2008 enrollment. We only admit students for the fall quarter and we do not have a terminal master's degree program. We cannot recommend for admission a prospective graduate student until the application file is complete (including all letters of recommendation, transcripts, application fees, etc).

Therefore, please begin the application process early enough to ensure that all parts of the application are received by January 2. Again, the Express Application provides us with some of the important information necessary to begin evaluating candidates, but the completed UCR Graduate School application is required for official consideration for the Psychology Department's graduate program. The Psychology Department requires the General GRE but not the Psychology GRE (note that the UCR GRE Institution code is 4839). Visit PsychGrad.org for more general information about putting together a successful application.

Fourth, browse through our online graduate brochure that describes the department, our four programs, and what life is like as a Ph.D. student in our department.

Hopefully, this brief outline will help you get started on your application process.

If you still have questions after carefully examining the links on this web page, please contact the Chair of Graduate Admissions.
